What is in your control and what isn’t? (a journal prompt)

My hot take this week: there’s more in your life that IS in your control in life… than that isn’t in your control.

Which means that if you’ve been stuck somewhere for a very long time, you’ve probably accepted that “it’s what you deserve” or “it’s the best you can do” or “it is what it is”… even if you’re telling yourself that you want to change.

Often the reason we accept life circumstances that we don’t like but COULD change is because we’re scared of the discomfort.

Just because we can change something, doesn’t mean it’ll be easy.

And that’s really, REALLY intimidating. I get it!

When I first tried macros in 2017, I feel like they “didn’t work for me” but in reality, I wasn’t really showing up. I was phoning it in, making excuses for I shouldn’t meal prep or why I couldn’t avoid alcohol on the weekends.

But really, I wasn’t being honest with myself about what was truly in my control… because it was easier to feel like a victim to my body.

My advice?

1) think about something you’ve been telling yourself that you want, i.e. to change jobs, to lose 10 lbs, to run a 5k

2) then brain dump on a piece of paper all the things that have been holding you back, every single little thing that has prevented you from reaching that goal

3) then start back at the top of that brain dump and ask yourself one by one if each thing you wrote down is *actually* a circumstance that you have the power to change (even if it will require work)

4) circle 1-3 things that you will try to change & make a game plan… this could be asking a spouse for help, booking time with your boss to discuss a new role, or hiring a macro coach to help you (note: this step will never be comfortable!!! Asking for help and creating change requires that we leave our comfort zone)

The final thing to reflect on ▶️ look again all the reasons you haven’t been able to get what you want: ask yourself “Do I really want this?”

As you read back all the reasons you’ve accepted present state, it’s okay to realize, for example, that the last 10 lbs just aren’t worth losing, because you’re choosing a life that you love more that the idea of being smaller (which maybe means having more flexibility and balance!) - and there is nothing wrong with that!! But stop telling yourself that you want to lose that weight when in reality, you don’t - it’s you torturing you.
