Diet Rules I Hate #1: Don’t Drink Your Calories

Do you drink your calories? I DO!!!!

Diet culture likes to make rules like “don’t drink your calories” to try and create black and white restriction to make losing weight “easier” 🥲

In reality every time we eliminate a food group… or we are telling ourselves that we don’t trust ourselves to just make choices that align to our goals so we have to create arbitrary rules!

I spent so much of my early 20s thinking that if I didn’t drink my calories, I would suddenly get the body I wanted. Instead, restricting certain high calorie drinks made me feel more deprived‼️‼️

While a lot of the rules are based in some true premise, they don’t make sense as all or nothing rules…

It is absolutely true that eating food that requires chewing and swallowing MAY provide a higher degree of overall satisfaction, both while eating as well as during the digestive process 😋

▶️ BUT liquids that have calories also can provide us energy as well as provide us a degree of satisfaction that is incredibly mentally important!!

If you are someone who absolutely loves putting cream and sugar in your coffee, like me, KEEP DRINKING IT.

With proper planning, it can definitely fit into your macros 🎉

However, if you’re someone who doesn’t LOVE liquid calories but drinks them anyway, and is struggling to lose weight, then this could be an opportunity to examine where you could replace some liquids to support your calorie deficit!!

Everything is a choice. There is no right or wrong way to fuel your body.

Here’s a checklist of questions to ask yourself next time you’re wondering if liquid calories make sense for YOU:

  1. Am I choosing this drink / snack with intention or is it a habit?

  2. Does this drink / snack keep me full? For how long?

  3. Is this drink / snack satisfying while I am drinking it?

  4. Do I feel satisfied afterwards?

  5. Would something lower calorie be as satisfying to me?

  6. If I’m looking to stay in a calorie deficit and need to find trade-offs to make, would I rather give up these liquid calories or give up another food throughout the day?

  7. Do I feel like I may be overeating due to a lot of daily liquid calories?

Comment below if you give these a try!
